I stayed still.
Rubén realized late what he had said, but he couldn’t stop.
“That workshop was mine too. I picked him up with him. And what did your dad do? He treated me like trash. He called me a thief. He threatened to hand me over.”
“Because you were”, I said.
His eyes changed.
The mask fell off.
“He didn’t think about family”, he spat. “He didn’t think about you. If he spoke, we were all going to fall.”
“Then you killed him.”
Ruben hit the table.
“It was an accident!”
Nobody spoke.
The silence hurt him more than any question.
“We argued”, he said, breathing hard. “He pushed me. I had the knife in my hand because I was cutting lemon in the kitchen. It went over me. It happened quickly.”
“And then you went up to frame my mom.”
Did not answer.
That was enough.
“You smeared blood on his robe while he was sleeping”, I said, my voice breaking. “You put the knife under his bed. You threatened a child. You let an innocent woman spend six years waiting to die.”
Rubén looked down.
But not because of fault.
For defeat.
“Your mom was easier”, he murmured. “Everyone knew that she cried a lot, that she got nervous. The police wanted to close the case. I just… gave them a story.”
I felt like vomiting.
Because that was the cruelest truth: it hadn’t been a perfect plan. It had been a comfortable lie. A lie that we all accepted because it hurt less than looking the family in the face.
Rubén was arrested that same night.
My mom’s case was officially reopened. The suspension became an indefinite postponement. Then came an urgent hearing. Then another. Experts, lawyers, journalists, family members came out who previously turned their backs on us and now wanted to hug us in front of cameras.
My mom didn’t want cameras.
I just wanted to sleep without hearing guard footsteps.
Months later, a judge overturned the conviction.
“Conviction revoked.”
“Immediate release.”
My mom didn’t move when she heard those words.
As if freedom was a language his body had forgotten.
Then they took off his handcuffs.
And then it broke.
Did not scream.
He didn’t kneel.
He just put his hands on his chest and cried softly, like someone finally getting permission to breathe.
I approached and fell in front of her.
“Forgive me”, I told him. “I should have believed you.”
She touched my face with skinny hands.
“You were a girl, Sofia.”
But I knew it wasn’t the whole truth.
I had chosen to remain silent.
He had chosen not to answer letters.
