I was alone in the bedroom, sitting on the carpet, trying on my wedding shoes in front of the mirror. The dress was still hanging inside its white cover, as if it were a pure and silent promise. In less than two weeks, I was going to marry Daniel, the man I thought I knew better than anyone.
My spacious and bright apartment in the center of Valencia has become the wedding preparation headquarters, because it is —as he said—« the most practical». I didn’t doubt anything at all.
As I buckled my left shoe, I heard voices coming from the kitchen. The door was ajar. I immediately recognized the low but firm voice of Carmen, my future mother-in-law. I unconsciously froze, not even daring to
Breathing.
Carmen said:
«Are you sure she doesn’t suspect anything?»
My heart jumped out of its place. Daniel replied in a tone I had never heard from him before:
«No, mom. Laura trusts us completely. Everything will be in our name as soon as we get married».
I had a shiver run down my spine. Carmen let out a short, dry laugh.
«Excellent. First we will take her apartment and her money. Then we will say that it is psychologically unstable. With some medical reports and a good lawyer, we will put her in a mental institution. No one will take it seriously».
My hands started shaking. The shoe fell to the ground in a muffled sound. I put my hand over my mouth so I wouldn’t scream. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I, Laura Martinez —self-employed architect— have been reduced to «plan», to swag.
Carmen continued:
«She has no family nearby. And you will be the worried husband. Everything will be easy».
For moments that seemed eternal, the world stopped. I felt nauseous, angry, scared… but something else began to grow inside me: clarity. Painful, but strong awareness. I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and contrary to all logic… I smiled.
I smiled because I realized I had received the most dangerous and precious gift: the truth. While they continued planning for Mary in the kitchen, I had already begun planning for my survival.
When Daniel opened the bedroom door a few minutes later and saw me sitting quietly, holding the shoe in my hand, I raised my head and said softly:
«It’s totally appropriate».
He smiled, not realizing that his toy, at that very moment, was beginning to disintegrate.
I slept little that night. Daniel was snoring to my neighbors with the relief of someone who thought himself victorious, while I stared at the ceiling, repeating in my mind every detail of what I heard.
I didn’t cry. I didn’t scream. I decided to act with a cold mind, because panic was exactly what they expected from me.
