I sold my wedding ring to pay for my son’s education – At graduation, he handed me a letter that I was afraid to open
This part didn’t bother me. What bothered me was that he thought he had to stop because of me.
Then came graduation.
Jack was one of the speakers. It mattered later, but I didn’t know it yet. I just thought that meant I had to attend more speeches before hearing his name.
He texted me that morning.
Don’t be late.
The auditorium was packed.
I replied: “I outbid you. It’s rude. “
Without admitting defeat, he simply replied: “Sit forward too. “
“You are authoritarian”, i sulked.
“I learned that from the best. “
The room was crowded. Families with flowers, balloons, cameras and handkerchiefs. I sat where he told me to sit and tried not to cry before anything even happened.
I felt my stomach knot.
When they started calling names, I applauded people I didn’t know. When they called Jack, I got up with everyone.
He walked across the stage, grabbed his diploma case, then headed to the stage to deliver the students’ speeches.
It was normal. It was planned. That’s why no one stopped him.
He thanked the teachers. He thanked his classmates. He made a joke that really made everyone laugh. Then his tone changed.
“There is one more person I have to thank”, he said.
I felt my stomach knot.
All heads near me turned.
He looked me straight in the eyes.
“Mom, would you like to come here? “
All heads near me turned.
At first I didn’t move. He had never liked public attention. Me neither, he knew it.
Then he said, more gently: “Please. “
So I got up.
Then he handed me a folded letter.
