I came home early to surprise my pregnant wife… but what I saw on the bathroom floor destroyed everything.

I came home early to surprise my wife, eight months pregnant, and found her on her knees scrubbing the floor while my employees watched. – TIN MOI

Only afterward did her gaze drop to the bundle on the table.

“How much?” she asked.

“Seventeen thousand pesos.”

She let out a slow breath through her nose.

“That much can buy a lot of trouble.”

“It can also buy food,” Lucía said, and immediately lowered her eyes as if ashamed to have sounded defensive.

Marta surprised me by nodding.

“She isn’t wrong,” she said.

That was the problem.

Nobody in that kitchen was wrong.

Not fully.

That is when choices become dangerous, when every truth arrives carrying its own wound.

I told Marta what I was considering before I fully knew I was considering it.

We could lock the money away until morning.

Send someone at first light to town.

Speak to Father Anselmo, who knew which police officer drank less and listened more.

Ask about anonymous surrender. Ask about protection. Ask about whether a shelter already struggling to meet regulations could survive being attached to money like that.

Marta listened, then asked the question I had avoided inside my own head.

“And if the officer tells the husband first?”

Silence followed.

Because that, too, was possible.

Rules are safest when the people holding them are clean.

I had lived too long to assume cleanliness came with a uniform.

Lucía’s hands trembled once, then went still.

“I should have left it,” she said.

“But when I imagined getting to the road with Tomás and nothing in my pocket, all I could see was turning back before dark.”

Her voice cracked on the last word, not loudly, just enough to reveal how close she had been to breaking since she arrived.

I understood that, too.

There are moments when survival narrows so sharply that ethics become luxuries chosen by people who still have time.

I hated that I understood.

That hatred was partly for the world, partly for myself.

“We won’t use it tonight,” I said at last.

Both women looked at me.

“Not one peso. Not for soup, not for wood, not for medicine. We decide what to do when daylight makes cowards and liars easier to identify.”

Lucía nodded quickly, relief and dread mixing in her face until they were indistinguishable.

Marta gave one short nod.

It was not approval.
