My finger hovered over the screen for only a second before I pressed the call button.
Logan stood up so quickly his chair scraped against the marble floor.
“Piper,” he said sharply, “don’t do this.”
Margaret’s expression hardened. “Who exactly are you calling?”
I looked directly at her.
“The wedding coordinator.”
The color drained from Logan’s face.
“Wait—”
But it was too late.
The phone rang once. Twice. Then a cheerful voice answered.
“Good morning, Ms. Collins! We’re just confirming floral delivery—”
“Hi, Vanessa,” I interrupted calmly. “I need you to place an immediate hold on every payment scheduled for today until I personally authorize them.”
Silence.
Then: “…I’m sorry?”
Margaret slowly rose from her chair.
“You cannot be serious.”
“Oh, I’m completely serious,” I replied. “No authorization. No wedding setup. No reception. No honeymoon transfers. Nothing.”
Vanessa’s voice became cautious. “Ms. Collins, the ballroom vendors are already arriving.”
“I understand,” I said. “But since the Bradford family will now be managing my finances, I assume they’ll be delighted to take over the remaining balances.”
I ended the call.
The silence afterward felt enormous.
Margaret stared at me as though I had slapped her. Logan looked trapped somewhere between panic and shame.
“You’re humiliating us,” Margaret whispered.
I almost laughed.
“No,” I said softly. “You invited humiliation into this room the moment you tried to turn me into a dependent with a paycheck.”
Logan finally stepped forward. “Piper, my mother is just trying to help us plan responsibly—”
“Responsibly?” I cut in. “By giving me an allowance from my own salary?”
“She didn’t mean it like that.”
“Then how exactly did she mean it?”
He opened his mouth. Closed it again.
And there it was.
The truth.
My father barred me from entering my own medical school graduation ceremony because my stepmother wanted her daughter to use my ticket. “You’re just a nurse’s assistant anyway, let your sister have her moment,” my father sneered, pushing me toward the exit.
I married a 60-year-old woman, despite her entire family’s objections… but when I touched her body, a sh0cking secret came to light…
Hip pain: what does it mean?
I THOUGHT MY ADOPTED DAUGHTER WAS TAKING ME TO A NURSING HOME… BUT WHEN I READ THE SIGN ON THE BUILDING, THE WHOLE WORLD STOOD STILL.
The housekeeper locked the maid and her twins inside… The millionaire’s reaction left her frozen.
